Web of Memory

by Tara Fox Hall

Sarelle’s return to her loved ones brings a brief measure of solace, even as she mourns all that changed in her absence. Rene’s presence and Sar’s pact with Shaker add as much tension as comfort, as the delicate balance of Sar’s life threatens to collapse under the weight of all she endured as Michael’s prisoner. Determined to reclaim her life, Sar fights back, inadvertently sparking Danial’s memory as an unseen ancient enemy prepares to strike a fatal blow.

When I left the bedroom a half hour later, Lash was there waiting for me. He gave me a hug and grinned. “I wondered if you two were ever coming out,” he said gruffly. “Because otherwise pretty soon, I was coming in.”

“How is everything?” I said, as we walked downstairs. “Dev’s women are coming in an hour or so. V’s practicing her piano and wants to see you. The guards are all doing well, but Kyle’s got that handled. And I’m starving for some home cooking.” The last was said in a very meaningful fashion.

All predictable. “What do you want to eat?” “Cornbread, regular bread, liquefied steak, pasta, some chocolate cake, and some gingerbread cookies,” Lash said, still grinning. “Though you can wait until tomorrow for the apple pie.”

Right. I began getting out ingredients. “Pasta and cornbread coming up, Mate. The others will have to wait until tomorrow, though I’ll make some of the doughs tonight.”

“Tired out?” he asked gently, hugging me from behind. “Sated. But I feel renewed, too.”

“Good,” Lash said, relieved. “From what Kyle’s told me, Dev needed this very much. you.”

That sounded ominous. I let it go, deciding it was better not to ask what he meant.

“I heard you made up with Danial,” Lash said casually. I knew what that casual note in his voice meant; he was at the edge of being pissed off and only needed a quick nudge to get there. Sorry, I’m not going to lie. “I did. We’re something like friends again.”

His tone turned scathing. “I hear Dev’s got a Monica look-alike coming tonight—”

“Stop it,” I murmured coldly. “I don’t want to fight.” Lash abruptly changed the subject. “Are you going to spend the evening with V? Dev’s going to feed and then he’ll be up all night dealing with his shitload of messages and returning calls.”

Sounded bad. But maybe it was nothing. “Yes, probably, if she wants to—”

“I want to!” V said stridently, coming in to grab me around the waist so hard I let out an “Oof!”

“Good,” I said, giving her forehead a kiss and marveling how tall she was. “You can help me make the doughs. Later we’ll watch a movie.”

“Can I pick the movie?” she asked. Groan. “Sure, Daughter Dear. We’ll have a girls’ night—” “I’ll be with Kyle until ten,” Lash proclaimed loudly from the doorway. “I’ll come up to bed after that. Wait up for me.”

“Of course,” I assured him. “You aren’t forgotten.”

“I’d better not be,” he hissed meaningfully as he swaggered out.
